Although we have temporarily closed our doors due to COVID-19, we haven't stopped. Not only has the incredibly talented, brilliant, diverse community around us not stopped, but they have continued to build and create businesses, support one another, and celebrate this journey we find ourselves on together. In the year since, we have been fueled by his legacy to press forward. On the eve of our opening, March 31, 2019, we along with the rest of the South LA community and the world learned about the untimely death of Nipsey Hussle. We cried, yelled, and meditated, on repeat. We had two false soft openings, ran a Kickstarter campaign, and worked full-time corporate law jobs. ![]() For example, we had to fix the plumbing under our concrete bathroom floors (three times!), we discovered water damage in our ceilings, which led to an unexpected refurbishing project, and we won't even get into navigating the various city, county, and state permitting and licensing requirements. ![]() ![]() The next thing is to start using the geometrical shapes as building blocks to make things. Or, better still, from the layers dialog, make the background invisible and choose Image -> Merge Visible Layers so you will have the background on a separate layer and you can work further on it if you like. You can choose Image -> Flatten Image to merge the layers togerher so you can save as jpeg or any other format than xcf. Now you have a cool image of a Light-Source-Shaded Cube. Now apply for your ‘Cube GIMP Licence’ from the nearest GIMP Station ) 4. Once you find the shading look good, you can flatten the image and our little tutorial-cube is finished. This time you pull the gradient from left to right, according the arrow in the picture. So I suggest you lighten the dark blue color a fair amount, it’s easier to get a light gradient that way. Now you probably know we want to make yet another path and this time the gradient has to be even lighter than in the first side. Again, create a new transparent layer and name it (who quessed? :) Top_side. Our final ultimate task is to create the top, side #3. You don’t want to leave any holes so the background can be seen through… It’s better to overlap the lower layer a bit than leave a space between them. This way we get a darker gradient suitable for the shadow-side. Take the Gradient Tool again and, still with the same colors, make a gradient from farther up-left to near the selection’s lower-right corner (see image on right). Use the Path Tool and try to make the right side of the cube and turn it into a selection. Create a new transparent layer and name it Right_side. We also want the lighter end of the gradient to be near our imaginative light source. This way you get a quite light-colored face for the cube, and it is just what we want here. Select the gradient-fill tool and, starting from the top-left of the selection, ‘drag’ the gradient quite far down-right (see the arrow in the image. Next we must choose some nice colors for our gradient, choose white for the foreground color and some dark-blue for the background (we are making a blue box, remember?) Something like that on the image nearby. Once you are satisfied with your “box”, convert it to a selection using the button “Create Selection from Path” (in the Path Options dialog) or using “Selection to Path” (in the Paths tab). Your path should look something like the one on the right. You can adjust the points’ places if you can’t get them right at the first try, see the Path tutorial for more information on that. (If this causes you trouble, don’t worry. Imagine the blue cube on the right side into your canvas, we’ll be doing side #1 now.Ĭhoose the Path tool and make something like the side #1 on the blue cube, think about the perspective. If it is not selected, click the layer’s name in the dialog. Make sure you have the new layer active by checking the layers-dialog. ![]() Now create a new transparent layer, and name it Left_side so you know what layer I’ll talk about later on. You can also get these tabs using Dialogs -> Layers and Dialogs -> Paths. This dock is present in the default GIMP installation. During this tutorial, you will have to use the Layers tab and optionally the Paths tab from the dock “Layers, Channels, Paths, Undo”. Make the size 256x256 pixels and choose RGB for the type. Let’s get started! ¶įirst we must create a new image for our creation. ![]() If you are new to GIMP I suggest you to go to the GIMP homepage in and first read through the Documentation section there. Paths are covered in my other tutorial, and I recommend you to read it before going further if you find the material here confusing. I was thinking about this, and I did not want to make this an ‘entry level’ thing, basically to avoid bloating this too big and duplicating other people’s work. You should be familiar with GIMP’s dialogs and menus. Notice! This is not a ‘back to basics’ -tutorial. I hope you get some help and new stuff to put in your GIMP Tricks Sack :) I personally use this technique for nearly all my work. I will concentrate on the Path tool since I find it so useful for this purpose. This tutorial is about making simple geometrical shapes with GIMP. Polygonal shapes are especially useful when painting some geometric objects, as you can draw one side at a time (into different layers if you want). But you can also use paths to create different polygonal shapes if you don’t ‘pull out the handles’. Maybe the best thing in it is the smooth, beautiful curves it produces. The Path Tool (replacing the old Bezier Selection tool) can be used in many creative ways. What does thumbs up emoji mean? Is it a casual “OK,” an enthusiastic “Great job!” or something more complex like passive-aggressiveness? Our journey into the world of emojis will reveal this and much more. But what does it really mean when we send that little hand icon? Mr Achter failed to deliver the flax in November and was found to have breached the Contract and was ordered to pay $82,200 CAD ($91,555.18 AUD) plus interests and costs. The court decided that the emoji response did, in fact, amount to an agreement of the contract terms. It did not matter that Mr Achter had exchanged many informal texts with the salesperson – or that he had received a joke from the salesperson in a previous message. He expected that the full contract would be sent later by fax or email for his review and signature. He argued that his ‘thumbs up’ was a simple confirmation that he had received the flax contract, but that he had not yet received the full terms and conditions of the contract. You guessed it – Mr Achter replied with a single ‘thumbs up’ emoji.Īccording to Mr Achter, the emoji was not intended to operate as a signature. That photo was sent to Mr Achter with a message that read “please confirm flax contract”. Court records revealed that an employee of the co-operative drafted a contract to buy flax for delivery in November in that year, signed it, and took a photo of it on his mobile phone. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the co-operative had ceased its face-to-face dealings between its salespersons and farmers, and instead handled contracts by phone or email. The decision stemmed from a dispute between a farmer, Chris Achter, and a grain processing co-operative in south-western Saskatchewan. However, the meaning behind a seemingly casual ‘thumbs up’ emoji was at the heart of a recent contract dispute case in Canada, where Judge TJ Keene ultimately found that the emoji was enough to constitute a legally binding contract. For many of us, we might send a ‘thumbs up’ emoji to convey the simple message that: “I’ve received your message”. At heavily populated intersections, traffic police would wave on traffic, and whistle for the attention of drivers. While motor cars did not hit the streets of the UK until later in the 19th. So this weekend we give a nod to one of the traffic pioneers who started it all. While Wire’s system was indeed revolutionary, the title of world’s first electric traffic signal goes to a system installed on August 5, 1914, at the corner of Euclid Avenue and East 105th Street in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr Knight came up with the idea for traffic lights after more than 1,000 people died in road accidents in London in 1866. Sophisticated and complex networking allows them to detect cars, adjust delays and sync intersections.Įffective signal coordination improves safety, saves fuel, reduces emissions, and enhances traffic flow, and to think it all had a start here in Utah. Today Utah has over 2,000 traffic signals owned by the city, county and state governments. Lester became very discouraged, but people from larger cities were impressed by the innovation.įollowing his service in World War I, Lester made several improvements to the design, and over several years the traffic signal we know today came from it. No one wanted to stop, and often officers would find the light had been knocked over or destroyed during the night. William Potts, a police officer, designed the first three-color traffic light.
